BelAZ (Belarus automobile plant) is a famous brand of the largest mining dump trucks in the world. The people of the ex-USSR saw the giant BelAZ trucks as symbols of great domestic manufacturing.
After the WWII, the country was in ruins and desperately needed powerful off-road trucks with a high load capacity. It was decided to start building a truck plant in Zhodino, a small town near Minsk, in 1946. The first truck was produced already in 1950. In 1958, the plant was rebranded as BelAZ, a name that is now known all over the world. This was when it produced its first giant truck – a 25-tonne dump truck MAZ-525.
The country's industry saw hard times after the breakup of the USSR, but the plant was able to survive and to enter the ranks of top three global producers of special mining equipment. Now BelAZ produces dump trucks with the capacity ranging from 30 to 450 tonnes, as well as tractors, airfield towers and other special equipment.
In 2013, the legendary company built the world's largest truck BelAZ-75710 weighing at 810 tonnes, almost as high as a three-level building (8.16 m) and over 20 meters long, carrying 450 tonnes of load. The monster truck was included into the Guinness Book of Records.
